Hi there – I’m Jennifer Engle, CPA and founder of Blue Haven CPAs, where we help hardworking contractors, trades, and small business owners take control of their numbers so they can focus on running the jobs that actually make them money.

Whether you’re running a one-truck operation or managing a growing crew, there comes a time when you start wondering:
“Do I have the right accountant on my team?”

Maybe your books always feel behind. Maybe you’re unsure where your profits are going. Or maybe you feel like your current accountant isn’t proactive—just reactive when tax season rolls around.

If that sounds familiar, it’s time to find the right accounting partner for your business—and I’m here to make that process simpler and more effective.

Step 1: Ask Yourself the Right Questions First

Before you begin interviewing potential accountants, take a step back and think about what you actually need help with. Hiring the right accountant isn't about who’s the closest to your office anymore. It’s about finding someone who truly understands your business goals, your communication style, and your growth vision.

Ask yourself:

  • What kind of help am I looking for—just bookkeeping or also advisory services?
  • What are my expectations for responsiveness, transparency, and education?
  • Do I want digital access to all my records, or do I prefer paper?
  • How do I want my accountant to communicate with me—emails, Zoom, in-person?
  • Do I need help with tax planning, financial statements, payroll, invoicing, cash flow, or business strategy?
  • What’s my budget for accounting support?
  • What do I expect my accountant to help me with?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll be ready to start interviewing with clarity and purpose.

Step 2: Ask These Questions When Interviewing Accountants

Now that you know what you're looking for, you can match that vision with what potential accountants bring to the table.

Here are essential questions to ask any accountant you’re considering:

  • Are you licensed (CPA, EA, etc.)? What certifications do you hold?
  • How long have you been working in accounting?
  • What services do you provide beyond tax preparation?
  • Can you provide guidance or referrals for legal, financial, or business support as I grow?
  • What accounting systems or software do you use?
  • How do you communicate with your clients and how often?
  • Do you regularly attend conferences or invest in ongoing education?
  • How do you stay current with tax laws and business regulations?
  • Do you specialize in working with businesses like mine?

These questions will help you weed out the accountants who are simply checking boxes from the ones who will truly partner with you to move your business forward.

What to Look for in a Great Accountant

The best accountant for your business should feel like part of your team. She (or he!) should:

  • Help you understand your financials so you can make smarter decisions.
  • Offer strategic insights and financial clarity, not just number-crunching.
  • Be proactive—not just contacting you once a year at tax time.
  • Support you through every stage of your business journey, from growth to exit.

Ready to Find the Right Fit?

To make your search even easier, I’ve created a free downloadable Interview Sheet with all the questions you need to ask yourself and any accountant you're considering. It’s a printable worksheet you can bring to your meetings so you feel confident, prepared, and in control.
